Does the socket stuff refer to the spot where the processor go?

Yes, the sockets are what the processors physically plugs in to. Different processor generations use different sockets. The latest Pentiums use Socket 775. The latest Athlon 64s use Sockets 754 and 939.

What will you use the computer for? Do you have a preference towards AMD or Intel?
If you go with Intel, go for the LGA775 (Socket 775 or Socket T), and if you go for AMD you want Socket 939 as they are the newest and will give you the most upgradability in the future.

At present, only certain Opteron cpu's are s940. The Opteron is the Multi-Processor option from AMD that predated the X2, on-die multi.
