Unhappy Please Help

O.K. This evening I went to reinstall High Heat 2002 (after having some lockup issues). I first unistalled the previous version and reinstalled the game. I also updated to DX 8.0a while I was at it. When I tried to play the game just before the intro it would kick me back to desktop. I retried again but to no avail. After looking for a while for the cause of the problem I also found out I had no sound. I went into device manager and there was no driver listed under SB Live. I then reseated the sound card, in case, and nothing. I tried to load the drivers form the SB cd-rom; as soon as I pop in the cd a small blank grey box appears right before the cd contents menu appears and I get booted to the desktop again.
Somehow I think the problems are related. It seems that if I put on a cd-rom with sound, I immediately get escorted to the desktop. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this and how do I go about fixing it? Everything was working fine until I reinstalled the game with the updated DX 8.0a. Oh and earlier in the day I installed the latest Promise Controller but I don't think that was the problem.
Please help I hate having to reinstall the OS which I'm going to have to do if I can't get this problem fixed. {Damn i hate computers sometimes!}
Oh and here are my specs:
900 t-bird
A7v133a
Sb Live Value
Windows ME

seeing that you have windows/me, why don't you restore your system back to a date when it was stable and go from there to see which program caused the screwup??

I have thought of that. When I go to system restore, for whatever reason, it says I have to restart the comp. I restart and try to run restore again and the same message appears.

Hey Thanks Bailey. With your suggestion as well as some desperation, I ran System Restore just for the hell of it and it worked. I love computers again. Sorry for the rant. God Bless Windows Me and System Restore. I know I ain't complaining. It's not the first time Restore has saved my hide. Long Live Windows Me and System Restore!!! Hail Hail Hail.
