Onboard Promise Controller
Asus CUBX-E
Promise ata 100 onboard controller I was hoping to update the Bios for the controller chip I checked the Promise site and the newer bios build is build 27,,, I am currently running build 19 All that I can get from the Promise site is to check with Asus, since it's an onboard controller Asus is a dead end, at least no help that I could find on the site. Would I be able to flash the ata bios with their latest update or am I stuck with this one due to the fact that it's onboard. Thanks |

Nope, get the update from Promise Tech and follow their upgrade instructions.

Hal9000, I will give it a shot. Thought I could, but wasn't willing to take a chance, cause I have been known to be wrong and got myself into deep $#%*. Thanks |

If you have some experience in bios upgrading and if nothing else helps there is a utility named CBROM.EXE this utility allows you to remove and reinsert data into the bios ..
You have the chance to test this before you burn the bios back to the chip and the most important thing is that it runs on plain DOS.here a short cutout of it: CBROM V6.02B (C)Award Software 1999 All Rights Reserved. Syntax: E:\CBROMN.EXE InputFile [/other] [8000:0] [RomFile|Release|Extract] E:\CBROMN.EXE InputFile [/D|logo|vga....] [RomFile|Release|Extract] InputFile : System BIOS to be added with Option ROMs /D : For display all combined ROMs informations in BIOS /vga : Add VGA BIOS ROM to System BIOS /logo : Add OEM LOGO BitMap to System BIOS /oem0-7 : Add special OEM ROM to System BIOS /pci : Add PCI BIOS ROM to System BIOS /err : Return error code after executed /isa : Add ISA BIOS ROM to System BIOS.(/isa Filename [xxxx:0]) /cpucode, /epa, /acpitbl, /vsa, /hpm, /hpc, /fnt0 - 5, /mib RomFile : File name of option ROM to add-in Release : Release option ROM in current system BIOS Extract : Extract option ROM to File in current system BIOS <<< Examples >>> E:\CBROMN.EXE 2a4ib000.bin /D E:\CBROMN.EXE 2a4ib000.bin /vga VGA.BIN /pci aha7850.bin E:\CBROMN.EXE 2a4ib000.bin /oem0 YYY.ROM E:\CBROMN.EXE 2a4ib000.bin /pci extract E:\> You can do alot of things and I think with this you can also update the controller bios code in the ASUS bios - But if you never have done something like this then DON'T EVEN TRY and if you still going to then be sure to have a BACKUP CHIP READY with the original DATA of the bios of your computer .! Use this on you OWN RISK because it may can be destructive to your Computer if used the wrong way.!!!

After that in depth explaination, I really wish I was that qualified to give it a try. But needless to say I'm not. And as you know, the bios upgrade from Promise will not work. Thanks ever so much for your time and effort.

I know the upgrade from Promise works as I have used it to upgrade that exact board.

I tried it and everytime, right after ptiflash Enter. I get a small blue screen tellen me Warning! The Flash memory type is unkown or the Flash memory is onboard. ESC to exit>>only option given. What am I doing wrong. I even tried DL it again just now to be sure it wasn't a bad DL and retried it on that system.
Same results, what am I doing wrong. |

OK, maybe something has changed in their flash programming. I have upgraded that board with a download from promise, but it was some time ago, so they may have changed it for whatever reason so that you can no longer do onboard controllers.

DM - if you are interested we can eventually do the upgrade for you since we got all the tools (eprom burner) etc here - I used Modbin and CBrom a lot in the past and I'm almost sure that it can be done using CBROM - Now I will make one just for the fun and then if it works will let you know - can send you the chip by airmal - since those chips are inexpensive here and burning will take only a few seconds..
But I can just agree with that ASUS changed their BIOS production -Protection - started with P3B and up and that now someone can't edit those Bioses anymore with Modbin as it was before that - Cbrom still seems to work but I have to test this first - so give a day or two I will let you know.. |

Thanks for the "fantanstic" offer, but after fighting with it all day Saturday (5 1/2hrs.)I resolved my issue I was having. scanner and onboard controller.
Bought a USB Scanner and put the SCSI aside. I tried everything under the sun to try and get it to work without any success. One fix would cause another problem an another,an another. It (scanner) would work flawless with any machine I hooked it up to that didn't have a onboard controller. I'm gonna miss thee old girl. (Scanjet 5P) Sorry for not gettin back to you sooner. Thank's Once Again, DM |
