"AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual-Core" vs AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core Processor

Ok. the first one is 500+ and the second is around 1000+ for price. I am trying to understand why are the differences and which one would be better for gaming?

The FX-60 has a 200Mhz higher core speed, which is no big deal. The main difference is that the 60 has an unlocked multiplier, which gives it more flexibility for overclocking. It's likely that you will be able to overclock it higher than the 4800+. If you're into overclocking and want to attempt to maximize performance, the 60 is probably the choice. Is that worth it, that's up to you to decide. In the gaming environment, the GPU means a whole lot more than the CPU. To me, the $500 difference could be spent on a superior video card(s) which would result in better gameplay.

I agree I would opt for the X2 and a better video card....Besides the FX alows to adjust the multiplier up and down from stock...doesnt mean it will boot if you raise it...

But for overclocking and upping the bus speed you'll want to LOWER the multiplier...Both of these cpu's will do that...so by that there is no difference...except the 500.00 more in price....just using a little logic the X2 would be better suited....

thanks guys. Would the x2 cpu be one of the best choice to build the gaming computer on the amd side? and what is a chip that can hang with the AMD 64 x2 from the intel side?

Oh boy, here we go........... There are proponents of dual cores for gaming machines and proponents of single cores for gaming machines. Currently, games aren't dual threaded so they don't take advantage of dual cores....they would just run on one core, leaving the second available to multitask for you. The one or two games that currently claim dual core support do NOT fully utilize both cores. Currently, a good single core like a 3700+ or 4000+ will perform at least as good in games as the 4800+ and may perform even better in some/most.

With that said, games in the future (probably the next 12-18 months) WILL start supporting dual cores and performing better with them. So take your pick. You could save some money with a single core now and upgrade in the future when dual cores will be cheaper, or bite the bullet and pay $600+ for a 4800+ now. Your choice.

As far as Intels, I don't know. I would GUESS that the 600 series processors would be the equivalent of the AMD processors I mentioned above.
