Question about SATA

If I had an external enclosure that supported SATA, can I plug it into a standard PC (that doesn't have SATA drives inside) and format the SATA drive?

I'm just trying to plan ahead as to what I can do in the event of hard drive failure on my new system that has the new WD 150gig 10,000rpm HD.

I use backup sofware, so restoring the system is no problem as long as I can format a new drive to put in my box.

I was thinking that if I ever did have HD failure, I could get a new SATA drive and use my wife's PC to format....

Not sure where you'd plug the drive into if the other pc doesn't have a SATA connector?

There are probably enclosures that will use a SATA drive and connect via USB...

What I have in mind is putting an SATA drive into an external enclosure that supports SATA drive...but connects to your PC via a USB port.

It wouldn't do any good to have a setup that requires an SATA plug in, when you are trying to connect to a PC that doesn't have SATA.

not important: Only if the housing has a SATA to USB interface card! Quite a few external enclosures that say SATA are only SATA to SATA, not SATA to USB.

Those are the first 3 I found at Newegg, there are more.
