heres the deal

i bought a comapaq b4 i knew anything about computers and now i am kinda stuck. i upgraded to the max amount of ram 2 mb and installed a slave hardrive so now i have 2 160 gig seagates. my question is can i put a 64 bit processor in my asus k8s-la socket 754 mobo. i searched the internet for answers and i cant find a thing even on the asus site i am left in the dark. i know that mobo was manufactured for campaq specifically but that is about all i can find out and if i cant go 64 bit can someone recomend a processor that will be an upgrade from my sempron because it is really holding me back. i really dont have the extra cash for a new mobo and haveing probs finding one that will support my graphics card wich uses agp slots. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you all in advance.

They make 754 sockets for amd 64s but u can't go 64 bit without windows64. Windows xp is 32 bit. You can only use 64 bit if you have the OS 64windows. I went to the asus website and i couldn't find ur mobo. How old is ur system? because some mobos support athlon 64 and some just support semprons. You might be better off saving for a new comp then trying to upgrade it. Especially if your a gamer. The 3400 looks like the best cpu for the 754 socket at 2.4ghs and 800mhz fsb but maybe someone else has a different suggestion that may be better. HOwever, i don't know if ur mobo supports it. Also some semrpons support 64 bit. You need to list full system specs for anyone to really help you. To many variables Go to newegg.com and look at the socket 754 line. They are around 150 bucks. Putting a new mobo wouldn't be the best idea because the new cards take pcix16 not agp and depending on ur case which mobo you can get. You can get newer agp cards but they are on the way out. I would save up some money and get a new comp. I dont' know how long you have had ur computer. Maybe you could sell it ect. All of this depends on what u use ur comp for. If you wanna play newer games or if you just wanna surf the net ect. Any of these routes depend on what you wanna use ur comp for.

Not true at all. You can run 32-bit versions of Windows on the Athlon 64. Most people do that because Windows x64 still has limited driver support.

The generic Asus K8S-MX supports all Sempron, Sempron 64, and Athlon 64 socket 754 processors, so the odds are pretty good the K8S-LA will too. No guarantees. I'd look on the HP website for bios updates before you try a swap.

I know. Thats not what I said. I said you can't run 64bit without windows 64. In other words you can have it but it wont' really be used until you get windows 64. Although i woudl wait till the buggs get worked out. I was assuming he thought that if you have a 64bit processor then it would support 64 bit with his current windows. Sorry if that was confusing. My signature says athlon 64 and i have windows xp so thats not what i was saying or atleast didn't mean for it to sound that way.
