secondary ide error

I just put a new computer together and have a DVD player master on IDE 1 and a hard drive master on IDE 2. When I boot up it tells me that there 80 conductor cable installed on the secondary IDE device. Then it boots just fine off the DVD. What does this mean?

I don't really understand why you have it set up that way and are booting to the DVD instead of the hard drive? I would swap them and make the hard drive primary master and the DVD secondary master or even slave it off the primary with the Hard drive. Is there a reason why you have it the way you do?

Some People like to be Different, but normal would be

IDE1 = Hard drive 0 (C) Master
IDE2 = Atapi Drive (DVD) Master

I tried that configuration, but when I put the HD on primary I just get the same error replacing "secondary" with "primary." I also tried letting the cable select and just got the same error. The message goes away after a few seconds and boot continues. I don't think that this is directly causing an problems but I'm having difficulties getting my OS up and running and so would like to be should all my hardware is in correctly. I have a new IBM Deskstar HD and an Abit KT7A motherboard. My pin setting options are (with 16 or 15 head): device 0 (master), device 1 (slave), cable select, forcing device 1 present. (with 32GB clip or auto spin disable): [the same options]. Does it matter how many head I claim? What does 32GB clip mean? I've tried just about all the master or cable select options I could and didn't fix it. Could've I messed something up in the BIOS to get this? I reset defaults once. Any suggestions?

The computer runs fine now except for when it is transfering large amounts of data from the DVD to the HD. Could this be related to my error?

For the suspected BIOS mess-up, look in your MOBO manual and use the jumper to reset your BIOs to it's virgin state. This is done with the power off! Just find the correct jumper, move it to the reset location, count to five and put it back to the original position. Then go back in and rest your BIOS Setting to what you need. For help on the correct settings I have included a couple of Links.
For the IDE Bus settings, use the Hard drive on the Primary IDE (IDE1) with the jumper set to master. And the DVD on the Secondary IDE (IDE2) with it's jumper set to master. If you have other devices attached to the IDE buses set them to slave.
Another item, since you built this computer, did you install the motherboard drivers. You didn't tell us what bord or CPU Brand you were using. Intel CPUS with Intel chipsets do not need the drivers, but Via Chipsets will have to have the drivers installed for the IDE Buses to work properly.

Abit KT7A - that's a Via-based board and you need to install the 4 in 1 drivers off the CD that came with the board. If you are using an 80 wire cable, use Cable Select jumpering and put the blue on the board, black on the drive. 40 wire cables use standard master/slave jumpering. Slow data transfer could be lack of DMA - you need to enable DMA on the drives.

On the IBM, use 16 heads and no 32gb clip.
