running around 62 C
this is what i have..Intel P4 Prescott 630 3.0GHZ 775 800FSB HT, asus P5LD2 deluxe mb, 1gig dual channel memory, well vented...XP pro
My temp on the cpu is running around 62 degrees C...is this too hot?? Some threads say these processors run hot...some people say they're running in the high 40's.... Any suggestions... Thanx Onad have stock heatsink...everything seems to be touching well |

Where are you reading the 62C from? Is that idle or on-load temperatures? Are you using WinXP SP2?

i'm using pc probeII....this is idle...using XP with sp2

Those don't sound like very bad temperatures for a Prescott. Until you start seeing visual evidence of heat-related problems (ie. crashing, freezing, artifacting, or lagging), you shouldn't need to worry. Few things. Check to see if you processor is running at 2.8Ghz (not 3.0) when you are idle. Also, on the hardware side of things, check to see that your heat sink is making contact with your processor and that the pushpins on the heatsink are pushed in all the way down onto the motherboard.

Those run hot, but you shouldn't be running 60C+ *idle*. That might be more typical for a load temperature. I'm afraid you might be getting up to the point where thermal throttling kicks in under a load (lowers the CPU's speed to try to keep heat controlled)...

thanx guys...going to take it apart and add some heatsink and reinstall the fan ...hope that makes a difference

Wait, "add some heatsink"? are you talking about the thermal interface material? You should just be using the pad that came with the stock cooler. Otherwise a thin amount of thermal paste works. Too much and you'll insulate it.

I would go as far as "take it off". You will be violating the limited warranty on the processor.

i was under the assumption if i removed the fan... the pad was unuseable and i would have to use heatsink then....correct?

I was using this site's "how to" to build my first....my cpu is 775..the fan came with a pad underneath it..just like the "how to " said....i didn't use any paste
"Some heat sinks have a rubber heat pad on the bottom of them. In these cases, you don't really need to use heat sink compound because the rubber pad will create the seal." So should i remove the pad and apply heatsink paste instead... Thanx Onad |

Well, you can remove the pad and use thermal grease like Arctic Silver, which will probalby result in temperatures a bit lower. Keep in mind, though, that the processor is meant to run with the stock heatsink and thermal pad just fine.
You need either a pad or thermal grease, but definitely not both at the same time! |

thanks doc...i appreciate all the help i'm getting from everybody....
as i was looking in my bios and with ai booster...my stock fan was around 1500 to 2100 rpms....could i run the fan faster..?...how do i find out what the max for the stock fan is..?...and most important...how do i increase the fan rpm? Thanx Onad |
