Dual Core vs. Dual Processor vs. Dual Core-Dual Processor

Recently, I have been writing processor-intense programs. They take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours to fully run, so I am looking at some hardware upgrades. It is a multi-threaded program to send server calls in groups, and then wait for a response. If I run the programs myself, I also use my computer for other things. That's sucking up processor time, too. I am looking to get a dedicated box just to run these programs. It will more than likely be running Linux, don't know if that matters.

My question is, what is the difference between a dual core and dual processor computer? Is a dual core processor just an updated version of the dual processor? Does it have any benefits? Also, if I am going to run a few programs, would a dual core-dual processor be any benefit? Would it even be possible?

Once I get this working, it will be shipped to a co-location data center as a main part of my web server. I would like it to be reliable and stable, but I do have a budget, as well.

There are a few server motherboards that will run 2 Dual core opterons. Dual core has 2 processor cores on the same CPU. Dual processor is two seperate CPUs. Dual core dual processor would be two dual core CPUs.

Yeah, isn't that cool? I was planning on going with a pair of Athlon 64 X2 CPUs with the Asus A8R32 MVP Deluxe (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/A8R32-MVP).

That is not a dual processor motherboard - it only has one socket. You need to look at server boards and Opterons to go dual processor in the AMD world. There are no A64 dual processor boards.

Requires registered ECC ram.

That's the lowest speed Italy dual core Opteron.

CRAP! It was in the dual board section at PriceWatch, but I figured out it was for the PCI stuff, not the processor.

What about Intel? Can I get a dual core-dual processor board for them?
