Drive Transfer

I just bought a new SATA hard drive and I'm going to clone my current C: IDE Drive onto the SATA Drive. If I clone it, can I change the SATA Drive to C:? If so how do I go about doing that, should I remove the other drives so that the system sets the SATA Drive as C:. Or, will the computer automatically detect it?

Clone the drive using a bootdisk or boot CD, then disconnect the IDE drives before you boot to Windows the first time.

Ok, so when I run Norton Ghost it will clone the drive outside of Windows and then when it wants me to reboot I will just shut it down completely unplug the IDE Drives and then boot.

Or just change the hard drive boot priority in the bios setup and you won't have to disconnect anything, nor reinstall windows. Even if your IDE drive was C:, as long as Windows is then booting from the cloned SATA drive it will also use C: for the SATA drive and give another letter to the IDE. You only have to disconnect other drives when installing Windows.

OK, I have one last question, is there a way to change the drive letter on a drive and/or change the name of the drive. I installed and cloned onto the SATA drive and everything works great, but I want my old IDE drives to be D and E but Windows turned the old windows drive into the G drive. The SATA drive is labeled as DRV3_VOL1, so I'm wondering if there is anyway to change that.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Use Disk Managment (right click on My Computer and select Manage) to change drive letters and names. You can change all but the C Drive.
