Yes, a full zero-fill does take a long time, depending on the drive and computer speed. On some computers I've dealt with, wiping a drive three times takes over eight hours.

It depends on what level of security you want. Evern after you zero-fill a drive once, a sophisticated user with the necessary money and time can probably get the data off of your drive. Where I work, our policy is to wipe it three times, which is Department of Defense standard DoD.5200.22-M. Personally, when I have disposed of drives, I have overwritten my drives using Eraser 15 times with random data. Nobody is going to spend the tens of thousands of dollars necessary to get information off of my drive; it's not worth it.

I thought you were giving it away? Are you going to be using this computer?

Do you have the XP Upgrade CD? If you do, and you have an older Window install CD, you can still use the upgrade CD to install Windows.

Yes, Linux will work too. OpenOffice can open Word documents, as long as they aren't too full of special formatting junk like inline tables.

There are way too many out there to say that one is best. I like Mandrake. Lots of people like Ubuntu. Knoppix is nice in that you just run it from CD, so there's no need to install anything. Just check them out and ask around.
