splat formate cannot run because the volume is used by another process?

formate cannot run because the volume is used by another process. formate may be used if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force adismount on this volume? (y/n) I pressed y and it came back and said
Cannot lock drive. The volume is still in use.
Idont know what to do cause i could not find anything on it on the net

What drive are you trying to format? You can't format the system (C:\) drive from within Windows for obvious reasons.

You'll need a boot disk to do this. You can download one from www.bootdisk.com.

Why do you want to format your C: drive?

If you want to erase all the data on the drive because you are giving it away, formatting it isn't good enough, because it doesn't erase the data. You need to wipe the hard drive by overwriting it with random data. DBAN will do that for you.

It runs off of a floppy; for a CD, you may want to try the Ultimate Boot CD, which includes DBAN: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

What error message are you getting? What disk are you using? If drive C: is NTFS, you aren't going to be able to change to it from DOS.

Right, because your C: drive is probably NTFS. Are you using the DBAN floppy disk or the Ultimate Boot CD? If you want to completely get rid of all of your data, you want to use one of those.

There's no code to put in. If your computer has Windows XP, then the C: drive is probably NTFS. You can't access an NTFS drive from within DOS. You can try FDISK to delete the partition, which will delete the C: drive, but that won't delete the data. Neither will formatting.

Once you get the DBAN floppy disk or the Ultimate Boot CD, then just run DBAN. It should be fairly intuitive.

It's only hard the first time!

Yes, you need to put DBAN on a floppy, or burn the ISO image of the Ultimate Boot CD (you can't just put the ISO file on the disk, you have to burn it as an image). The DBAN floppy should automatically launch DBAN, otherwise if you use the boot CD you will have to go through a few menus.

Look on the hard drive for the sticker that tells who made it and what the model is. Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, etc.

Just open up the computer case and take a look, after shutting everything down and unplugging it of course.

If it is a WD, you can go here to download the Data Lifeguard diagnostics to test the drive and zero-fill it.

If it is Maxtor you need this. Download it and run it, it will create a boot floppy that has the necessary software. You will want to test the drive, then run a full low-level format to zero-fill the drive.
