I have a COMPAQ Presario 5724 pc. The processor in the pc is a 500mhz Celeron. I would like to upgrade the processor to a PentiumIII 1ghz. Does anyone know if this is possible without having to replace the motherboard. If not, what can my processor be replaced with? Can the processor be replaced with an AMD processor as well? Any help would be appreciated.

Nope - you are maxed out at a Celeron 500. You can't replace the motherboard either - Compaq is proprietary and a standard board will not fit in the case. New computer time.

If you want to build your own PC, you have to buy a new case, mainboard, cpu (with heatsink+fan), probably power supply and maybe the RAM (depends on your new CPU).
All other things (hard drive, floppy, cdrom, dvd, burner, keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer, whatever you have) can be transferred from the compaq. RJ
