AMD XP 3100+ temps

Hello... I looked at a comp today that was getting temps of 75+ before dieing out. I cleaned out the cpu fan + heatsink and maxed the fan. After all that it is stable at 50c and under load maxing around 60c.

Now given that it was an AMD let alone XP 3100+ I thought that was unusally high. So I will probably replace the thermal paste...however I don't expect that to have a durastic effect. If nothing good happens, I may replace the stock cooler. I am wondering what normal idle and load temps would be for this CPU and if you agree with something being up.

Is this the Sempron 3100+ or the Athlon XP 3000+? If it's the AXP, you may benefit from adding a small dot of arctic silver/thermal trasnfer onto the CPU to transfer the heat. Take note that adding third party thermal compound will void your processor warranty if there is any. In terms of ideal temperatures, anything under around 45~50C idle is fair game for a Barton/Paris Cores.

That's kinda warm for idle. My XP 3000+, 400 fsb only runs mid to high 40's C while idling and 53C with the cpu at 100% load running Folding@Home. I had to change the heatsink and fan tho in order to get it to those temps. I'm using a cheapie Speeze heatsink and an 80mm Thermaltake Smart Fan. The Smart fan comes with a 3 position speed control and I'm running the middle setting. It's in an early Sonata case and you can hardly hear the fan.

So you think I should consider getting a new fan? (CPU)

Take a look at your case ventilation first. What's the mobo temp?

Mobo temps are generally pretty steady around 30c

I posted this in mjkovis' thread a couple threads down, but believe it applies to your scenario as well. Maybe take a look at the speeze falconrock/whisperrock coolers, I paid 12 bucks for mine almost 2 years ago, and with some artic sliver the temps should drop down to an acceptable range again. Keep in mind if you remove the heatsink, therefore ruining the thermal pad, you will void your cpu warrenty. You can probably ignore the advice on checking the bios as it's somewhat irrevelant

I eventually stuck a speeze falconrock cooler on it and it lowered the temps around 5-7*, but the barton chips always ran pretty hot from what I have heard and from my own experience.

Edit - I believe the meltdown temp on those chips is 90* C, and i think mine regularly kept in the high 60s to mid 70s when fully loaded (oc'ed with stock cooling). I kept the shutdown temp at either 75 or 80, dont really remember now

Any suggestions on other coolers? Any ideas without voiding the warrenty? I think its bad that the stock cooler doesnt help so I have to void the arrenty to keep it safe

How many case fans do you have, where are they and which direction are they blowing the air?

I think I rear 120mm Fan is all, there might be an 80mm intake in the front
