it does seam a bit too high to me also, I have built 4 systems with the cpu and they all run in the lower 40's depending on the room temp.
make sure that you have good air flow through the case.

In some discussions I have read they also state that temperatures will drop after a couple days use of the computer. This has something to do with the properties of the thermal compound. However, I have never verified this information myself.

Make sure that your heatsink is on there 100% correctly - otherwise you will run into heat problems. Yes, it can be tricky, so I recommend installing the heatsink onto the motherboard outside the case.

How is the airflow set up in your case? Do you have any case fans? If so, which direction are they pointing?

Another issue could be poor airflow in which hot air is traped and circulated inside. Make sure you have exhaust fans, generally in the upper rear end of the case.

yes, i think you need to do something, that is much higher than I would feel comfortable with, start with checking that the heatsink is good on the cpu, then add one or two more fans to the case to get more aie moving, and check the temp in the bios to verify that the readings are the correct.

also if you do have the temp in the room with the computer very warm, then yes the temp in the computer will be a bit warmer too.

IS that CPU a prescott core?

I have a 3.0G prescott and they run hot. I had mine up for a few months and temps averaged from 60-70 after it was running for a while. The CPU fan and heatsink were really loud and I bought one of these: ZALMAN CNPS7700 and my temps are around 50 now, sometimes aroud 40

I was told that it is normal for prescotts to run much higher...

not sure if this helps, but I hope tho

i have a prescott 3.0..it was running around 65....after a couple of weeks it had come done....usually running mid 50's...sometimes as low as 48....i'm using fan that came with cpu and the thermal pad...it seems that my asus motherboard will increase the fan speed as temp changes

its a ceder mill core but i think it is the same except for being 65nm instead of 90nm. It suppossed to run cooler than the prescotts but its not

motherboard reporting wrong temps?

i ran another 2 minute stess test that comes with the board and the temps went to 63 but this time i had the side off and felt the heatsink. at 63c it was barely even warm. at 63 it should be hot shouldnt it? could the mb be reporting the wrong tempertures?

That heatsink does a good job of dissippating heat. That's what its made for. Mine runs at mid 60's (its prescott, I don't worry about it much any more) for weeks, and the heatsink is barely ever warm.

Think of it like this: when a 1inch by 1 inch or so processor puts out 65'C, the heat is transfered through the thermal compound (to maximize conductivity) and is then taken into a heatsink that is about 3 inches in diameter, and 2-3 inches tall. The heatsink is specially designed to spread the heat out evenly between the many "Fins" that you see right below the fan - this makes each fin take some portion of the energy, and also allows the fins to each individually catch fresh air. The fan then brings the fresh air down into the fins to cool it off.

I just upgraded my wife's computer with a 631 Cedar Mill on a ASUS P5LD2-VM and I'm seeing idle temps of 36C. You really got to make sure the Intel heatsink is installed correctly or you won't get good contact between it and the CPU heatspreader for good thermal transfer.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I upgraded to a P4 3.4 Ghz and checked the CMOS to make sure of the settings. The temps showed 62c and that was just the CMOS; turn on Folding@home and temps would climb to 75c. Room around 73 or 74F. Today I reseated the heatsink: after loading the OS it showed 51c; not where I want to be but a big improvement. I wonder about the heatsink: it seems very marginal. Anyway, thanks again to everyone here for the help.

temps down

my temps are down to around 38 to 41 at idle 55 or 56 at load. i added two fans but didnt really see the temps go down for two days. maybe its the rooms temp. it has been a little cooler in the room lately but not more than 10 degrees. in the morning when its real cool i get down to 32.

I read in other threads that it's normal for the temps to be high for a couple of days, then drop off. Since I'm starting out 10c cooler, if that happens, I'll be good to go. Will be back in a couple to let you know.

Ambient room temperature will affect the temp of the computer. If the room is warm, the computer will run warmer. If the room is cool, the computer will run cooler.

After reseating the heatsink and running for three days, the temps have come down 10c during surfing and low-load operation; temps run above 60c during moderte stuff like Photoshop work. When I load in Folding@home though, the temps still climb above 70c and I shut the system down. The heatsink/fan is an Ultra model Copper Fan Skt 478. I wonder about the case, too; I pulled the side of the case off and the cpu temps dropped 2-3c.
