Is My CPU Temp OK?

Hi

I have just finished building my first system and would like some advice on CPU cooling.

I have the I-cute 0314tl case with the three standard fans and standard PSU (400w). mobo is Gigabyte GA-8I915G-MF fitted with 2 x 512MB DDR400 RAM.
CPU is Pentuim 4 550 LGA775 3.40 GHz (Intel Retail boxed). Seagate SATA II 250 GB HD.

I have not yet installed the OS as I want to ensure everything is running OK first.

In CMOS Setup Utility the CPU is running at 55-57 Centigrade.

I am using the heatsink/fan which came with CPU.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The LGA775 heatsink can be difficult to install and you might want to check to see that the prongs are completely through the holes in the motherboard and that the locking pins are fully engaged. Installation instructions.

I pushed all the prongs in hard again and one made a definite click sound, looks like it wasn't properly engaged. Anyway, temp is now hovering around 48 centigrade in CMOS around 10 lower, so much better, many thanks

Although this isn't related to your original query, I thought I'd mention that the iCute power supplies are of horrible quality - possibly the worst I've ever seen. One I tested showed 16v on the 12v rail!

I'd consider replacing it to ensure the survival of your components.

Thanks for your advice, I have read that this may be a problem with this PSU, so I think I will look at replacing it just in case, as this is my first build I want it to be successful.

Thanks again.

Figured I'd mention it since iCute isn't around in the US (guess we Brits have to suffer!). In my experience, www.overclockers.co.uk have the best range of power supplies (though watch the £8 delivery charge!). Ebuyer also have Hiper and Antec units and can be cheaper than Overclockers on these two brands.

I don't see what Video card you're using from your sig, but unless it's a super high-powered one, I'd say a quality ATX2 450w unit would be suitable for your build.
