Possibly needing a new fan
Hi, I have a Dell Dimension 2350. Everything is stock except a 512 stick of kingston RAM (=1gb) and a 128MB nVidia PCI video card. I use my desktop to play an MMORPG = this computer is used a lot, for extended periods of time. Often, I will notice that my room is getting really hot, and this is the time when the noise comes about. It sounds like the fan's RPM is going higher as the sound increases, then after a few seconds, it goes back to normal. I have also noticed whatever is making the noise, probably the fan, is a little louder than it used to be. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

yes that is possible, some fans are temp controled and when the temp goes up, so will thr rpm of the fan, two things you can do to help, one is to make sure the fan is clean and has good air flow, even adding another fan would help with air flow.
the second thing that would help would be to make the room cooler, the room temp will have a big effect on how the cooling inside the case does its job. |

I think a lot of dells have thermally controlled fans...based on the exhaust temperature. So yes, as it warms up, the fan would speed up. I don't think you'll be able to add another fan without doing some chopping.
