Not sure which heatsink to buy
I'm a 14 year old, so I don't have as much money for parts as most people. So I research a lot about something I buy. I'm wondering whether to buy a Thermaltake Polo 735 or a Scythe Bear with 2 fans.
The Thermaltake would cost a bit more. It also is made of copper, the Bear is aluminum. I've heard copper really takes teh heat away, but aluminum disperses the heat into the air better. The polo looks better with the fan speeds in the 3.5 in. drive bay, but the Bear has 2 fans. I'm not sure which to buy, but I'm leaning towards the Polo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185008 (Bear) http://pcclub.com/product_details.cfm?itemno=A1911033# (Polo) P4 2.66 ghz @ 2.85 ghz (idle at about 60 C) LGA775 MSI PM8M2-V One intake fan in front one going out (both 80mm) |

I'd lean towards the Scythe Bear because of the copper/aluminum construction, the heatpipe technology and because it runs a little more quietly than the Thermaltake Polo.

I've got the Polo with what appears to be the same CPU. It works pretty good, although it can be noisy on full blast. I use the thermal control and it goes up about halfway so it's not too loud.
It idles at about 35C and up to 45-47C under a load (OC'd about the same too). However, I've got 120mm fans in the rear so that might make a small difference. If it's idling at 60C you might have some other problems...what kind of heatsink do you have now? I can't really offer any opinions on the Scythe...One thing about the Polo is that it weighs a ton (something in the order of 750g, a little over 1.5 lbs). It's over Intel's max weight recommended for the socket (something like 450g) so be very careful moving it around. It's no wonder since the thing is a solid block of copper. I believe you are right, copper has better heat capacitance properties but aluminium has better dissapation properties. EDIT: Cricket's right, the Scythe should run quieter. The Polo is loud once it speeds up, keeping it low causes the temps to go up higher too.

Yea, next time i open up teh case of my computer I'm gonna move it to a better ventilated area, cus it's in a bad spot. The heatsink is bad too. It's a presscott core unlike yours so I expect it to run a little hotter. I have the stock heatsink, I shouldn't even oc with the stock one. And would you reccomend Arctic Silver? It's aobut $10 at my local hardware store. (Arctic Silver III)

Move my computer, right now it's under my desk....in a corner....with the heatsink fan blowing to the wall, that might not be the best place.

Ah, yes, those Prescotts do tend to run hotter than ones like my Northwood. Moving the computer should help some too. Btw, you can grab some AC 5 from Newegg for $6 if/when you buy the heatsink.
