Unreadable Segments

Can anyone point me to a good place where I could read up on what to do (or when to stop doing and just get a new HD) with unreadable sectors detected by chkdsk.

I have an old 40G HD with and it makes the chkdsk freeze at some point (65%) after it detects a few unreadable segments; unless it takes REAL long without giving any clue and makes me think its frozen...

Btw I was able to format the drive so there is nothing on it.

If you have any good reads on that, let me know!

Thanks.

If you have just formatted the drive, run manufacturer's diagnostics on it. ANY errors, replace the drive. It's only going to get worse.
