Do all processors require a heatsink? The processor I have on order states that it comes with a cooler (fansink) but no mention of a heatsink.
Is there anything else I need to do when installing a new processor. Cheers, Bailz. |

Yes, all today's processors require a heatsink to prevent them from overheating. The term 'fansink' will mean a heatsink and fan combination, which is the standard. Retail Box processors from AMD and Intel come with good units, preinstalled with thermal paste, which aids conductivity between the die/heatspreader of the processor, and the bottom of the heatsink.
The most important thing to do when installing a new processor, is to make sure the heatsink is locked down perfectly. FK

Also, make sure the fan is plugged into the proper fan header on the motherboard.

Just to reiterate on an earlier point - make absolutely certain you correctly apply the heatsink the first time - because a lot of thermal pastes are heat-activated adhesive - rather - they tend to physically bond the processor to the heatsink. When I installed my new 2gHz Athlon64 on my new motherboard the heatsink pulled out the processor when I had to remove it (the board was defective.) The ZIF socket was still engaged when I pulled out the heatsink, so it bent a bunch of the pins - which I had to re-align.
IMO, this is a major design flaw.

To add further to what bsemaiktehr posted........when removing a Heatsinf/Fan.........gently rotate it left & right to "unstick" it from the CPU, before pulling it up and away.

I always find it a good idea to run the system for a while before shutting down and removing the heatsink, which softens the thermal paste.
