Attention overclockers! You've got to see this article over at THG. They've discovered that a $130 Pentium D 805 2.66 (533FSB) can be overclocked to as high as 4.1Ghz stable and can compete with the other $1,000+ dual core CPUs like the FX-60 and Intel Extreme Editions. Check it out!

That is a good long read....
Seems very doable...nice to see there is a good clocking chip that will muck up the competition a little....curious to see how many jump on that....

Very interesting.............do we have another 1.6a Northwood here? Or think way back to the cacheless Celeron 300?

I have never messed with those...
I do have a few PII's and PIII's in the 450 and 500mhz flavors....other than that I have been AMD all the way.... Coarse this 805D sounds like it would be fun to play with.... |

Nice find... I glanced over it, and will read it in more detail later. Sounds doable - I think I might even try it - been wanting to get a cheap, but efficient PC up and running for my parents. I don't think that I would push for 4.1GHz, but the high 3's would be nice.
Looking over the Benchmarks, it compares very closely (at 4.1) to my FX55 Clawhammer - I could have saved over 600$.

Unfortunately, that overclock requires insane amounts of energy. I think after the overclock, it was pulling ~200W more than before the overclock.

My tax refund should be showing up in another week or two and if nothing else turns up this is my new project.

With that said, I won't be switching anytime soon, but that is an insane overclock and an interesting read.

wish they found something like that for the AMD's... is AMD going to come out with anything to compete with Intel's new CPU? ( I don't remember what it's called)

hahaha im actually switching sides (for the time being), i think i'll do this for my senior project.
then SLI and upgrade it after wards (my dad's budget, then my money) What kind of water cooling is reccommended for this? I didn't see anything on what they used as water cooling. Last edited by spartan015; 05-13-2006 at 10:53 PM. |

They used a Zalman heatsink. No water cooling.
I'd like to see Newegg's sales figures for the 805D after this article... there's going to be a shortage and then due to supply and demand, the price goes from 130 to 250. |

Well some of this is all hype....
When they are running that 805 D in benchies you dont see them compare it to ANY othe overclocked cpu... How about the compare it to the AMD's when they are overclocked...like lets say a Opteron 146 running at 600fsb (for real) at 3.0ghz with only 1.5vcore...this is ver common for these chips... these will smoke a stock fx chip... but it would be nice to see those results... I just wonder who'd come out on that...? Last edited by MaxRat; 05-15-2006 at 08:08 AM. |
