com port
hi, hope i am in the right form. I may also post this at win 9x
how can i assign a particular port (com3 / com2) to a modem? Will PnP reassign at boot? I am thinking that the proceedure would be the same for every pc. In Device M. or Modem properties etc...Or at leat remotly the same. thanks in advance |

You may be able to get it to use com 2 if you must. Remove all modems and com ports from the device manager. Disable Com 2 in the BIOS and restart. Might want to give us more system specs and what type of modem you are using.

Hi again, and thanks. Yes you are correct, I should have given more info.
Sorry about that. Its on a W95. Now here is the sticky part, its not my pc. i am trying to help someone-thru E-mail(makes it that much more fun). its a gateway 233MMX. I dont know what MB or Modem manufacture, great huh. I was really hoping that there was a way to force a modem to use a specific com port. and I was hopeing it would be a generic typ of way that would apply to most PC's. I should no better! i am also learning as i go along on this. How do you shut off a com port in the SET-UP? Would i go int the setup and Disable the serial port? Just go by the IRQ to see which one I want to stop? ex: IRQ is com2 so disable that 1 to force use of com 1? thanks again |

If that's the factory Gateway modem - it may be a hardjumpered modem and you won't be able to change the port without pulling it out and rejumpering it. It also might be a Winmodem - if so, good luck. Those are going to do what they want to do anyway.
