Maxtor Hard Drives
Forum members,
I'm thinking about purchasing a 500 gb Maxtor pata hard drive ($277 on sale). I currently own a couple ide WD hard drives and I would like to purchase this additional hard drive for storing image backups. I have a couple questions: 1. Has anyone had any consistent bad experiences with Maxtor? I know I have myself had (2) WD hard drives go bad over the last year (both 1 month past the 3 year warranty period, if you can believe that), so I'm wanting to try another brand (especially since Maxtor has a 5 year warranty now). Maybe there is a thread out there where someone has polled everyone's favorite ide hard drives (not ready for sata yet). If not, I would like to get everyone's opinions on their favorite hard drive brand. 2. Can Maxtor and WD live together peacefully in the same computer? Is anyone out there running WD and Maxtor internal hard drives? I still have my original ABIT M/B, which has 4 ide channels. I am also running Windows XP PRO. You can see my specs in my signature. I am standing by looking forward to your input. PM |

Off the top of my head, I would not believe that having both a WD and a Maxtor hard drive would cause conflicts of any kind.
I swear by Maxtor due to brand loyalty. My reasoning? Because I saw that name first. I do have one Maxtor hard drive that was killed off due to a bad power supply, but I doubt that is Maxtor's fault. However, this should not affect your judgement, since it was an unlikely scenario. I do believe both Maxtor and WD (along with Seagate) have very positive reviews on this forum.

Seagate just bought out Maxtor. I have had mixed experiences with Maxtor in the past, and will not buy them. For PATA drives, my choice is Seagate these days.

I wonder how long it will take before Seagate improves the quality of their Maxtor acquisition.

I doubt they will - I'd expect to see the Maxtor brand disappear.

GLC,
I took your advice and purchased a 400 GB Seagate pata hard drive. With the instant rebate, my 12% Best Buy reward zone weekend discount coupon, the hard drive ended up costing me a total (including tax) of $169. I can't complain about that. I installed it, initiated it, and used XP to format it into (3) equal primary partitions. I was successfully able to create, store, and verify an Acronis True Image on one of my Seagate partitions. I could not be happier. Now between this, the image backups that I already have on my other backup internal WD hard drive (answers that question of whether 2 different brands of hard drives can live together in the same computer), the images and key files stored on my external WD drive, and key backup files stored on my Iomega cartridges and my thumb drive, I should be thoroughly protected in the future, since I do not know how long my original WD drive (with the OS) will last (its two brothers already have died in the last year). On top of this, I have a 5 year warranty with Seagate. Life is good right now. Once again, thanks for your (and other forum members) advice. PMADDOCK |
