Does the drive show up in the BIOS boot screen?
What version of Windows are you using?

Usually it does say the manufacturer of the drive in the BIOS screen.
As you are using XP go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager and look to see if the new drive shows up in the list of hardware.
You can also right click "my computer" >manage>disk management and see if the drive shows up there.

OK we need a little information now.
What make is your master harddrive? and what make is your slave harddrive?
What IDE cable did you use to connect the two drives to the motherboard? 40wire or 80wire?, the plugs on the 40wire are all the same colour, usually gey or black. The plugs on an 80wire are usually blue to the motherboard, Black on the far end of the cable and grey in the middle.
What have you set the jumpers to on the back of the drives?

Did you go into Disk Management to partition and format the new hard drive yet?

ok so its 80 wire

blue to the mother board , black on the end which is conected to my mater drive , and in the middle it is grey , this is connected to the slave drive. on this harddrive , there are no jumpers coz that makes it slave i believe.

and if i added a new harddrive as slave , do i have to format it , coz i wouldent mind trying to get the windows off it , im not to botherd tho , i have two copies , but i was just seeing.

On an 80-wire cable like you have, you should jumper both hard drives to cable select. The drive that is at the end will be recognized as a master drive. The drive connected in the middle will be recognized as the slave drive.

Also make sure it is detected in your CMOS (you might have it setup as something like "not installed" while it should be to "Auto" so it can auto detect it.

So if you have it as secondary master, make sure in CMOS that secondary master is setup to "Auto" and not something like "not available or not installed"..
