FX60 (socket 939) vs FX62 (AM2)
Besides the price and the cpu speed. is it worth that 500-600 dollars more to get an FX62?
current price for an FX60 is $814 (wow thats pretty cheap, remember when the FX57 were like 1100??) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103608 current price for an FX62 is $1200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103861 My friend wants the best parts, but also something pretty reasonable too. I was wondering how much of a performance boost it would be to get an FX62 if I was to go on the new technology of AM2 and if I should look into AM2 Dual Cores like the X2 4600+. So is the FX62 worth it? or something cheaper a better idea? I mean theres expensive parts, and theres expensive useless parts.

I don't think $400 is worth .2GHz more and the 2% DDR2 increase.

Well for starters, you can tell him that theres really no such thing as "The best parts" at a "reasonable price". I mean, the cheapest CPU he is thinking of getting is enought money to get 2 complete systems from Dell.
So if he thinks an FX chip is still really worth the money, I wouldn't suggest going any higher than the FX-60. Go with Blue's suggestion. |

I would either go for the FX60 or wait for the price of the other CPU to drop.

Personally, I'd grab a 170 Opteron for less than $400 and overclock it past the speed of either one, but that's just me.

Does he want a fast computer, or does he want bragging rights? The first comes relatively inexpensively, the latter he will pay through the nose for.

I would buy an Opteron over a FX series chip...The FX series have the multiplier unlocked up and down...
While other A64 chips are multiplier unlocked on the down...meaning you can lower the multy... Not worth the extra expense when you wont ever really raise the multy higher than what its rated at... I have heard (rumored) that all AM2 chips are RHT capable (reverse hyperthreading) so when they get a board and software to utilize it...then it will be better...but other than that...not even close to being cost efficient... the best Opteron dual cores out right now are the 165's and 170's...most are hitting 2.9ghz per core on the 165's and quite a few are hitting 3.0ghz...but thats not the point here...
