I need to format my parent's hard drive on their Power Mac G4 1.25
They use OS9 Can I format the hard drive on a windows machine using FAT32 then put it back in the Mac and re-install 0S9

The Mac installer will reformat by itself. Macs use HFS+, not FAT32.

I have been trying to fix this damn thing for months now, my parents love it and I can't find anyone around here who can work on them. The machine boots and works normaly for around an hour then it locks up and dies. then it wont reboot for about 4 hours. I replaced the power supply, I sent the Micron ram sticks and they replaced them with new ones. I took the heat sink out and cleaned it and the processor and applied new thermal paste and re-installed it all. I replaced the battery, replaced the CD Burner, replaced all the IDE cables. It is still doing the same exact thing, if I leave it off for 3 hours or longer, it will boot again and work for an hour then die. If I turn it on and reboot it does the same thing. No wonder less than 2% of computer users buy Apple. To replace the power supply I had to remove 8 Rivets to take out the walls holding the cables in place (Have they not heard of screws at apple?) then I had to re-rivet it all in place. What a nightmare!!!!! Can anyone PLEASE shed some light on this and help me out? Should I assume its the motherboard and tell my folks to simply throw it out? I am so frustrated!

Interesting point about the rivets.
Any chance you can post some photo's on a photo hosting site and post a link back here?

Sounds like a component is dying. When it gets warm, it shuts down. When it cools off, if works.
So, cool them off, 1 by 1. When it shuts down, spray some canned air on 1 or 2 components, try restarting. Eventually you'll find the baddie. |

It seems like I had a similar problem on an IMAC. The solution was to replace the motherboard to the tune of $400. It was under warranty though.
