Try clearing the cmos.
The instructions should be in your manual.
I take it there are no beeps and that you can't tell what it's checking for when it freezes?
If clearing the cmos won't do it then it's time to post your specs and do 'out of the case' troubleshooting.

Guessing you mean you took out the second drive and can't bootup without it?

Check the jumper settings on the main drive. Some have settings for Master WITH Slave or Master - no other drives...

Is this the drive your selling to your friend or is it your own computer thats having the problems?

yeah it's my computer i'm selling hard drive with windows on. I managed to fix it but don't know how long for. I booted using the windows cd, and ran repair on it using check disk. this seems to have fixed it, any idea why this happened in the first place??

Perhaps you need to run manufacturer's diagnostics on the hard drive before you finish the deal - it may be a bad drive.
