modem dial-up display won't show correct connection speed..

hi all,
i just bought a new 56k INTEL MD563x-HaM PCI modem and so far i have not been very pleased. i have installed the latest drivers for it from the intel web site but is still refuses to display any speed other that 33.6kbps in the connection window. i have connected over 150 times in the last 2 days and the speed has never altered by a single byte. does anyone else have the same modem as me? if so what do you think.

my old modem was a really good dynamode ISE 56k modem and i was really pleased with it but unfortunately, my new mobo has no isa slots so i was forced to get the intel one instead. it was recommended to me by a techie friend who works at the shop i got it. he's trustworthy as he hates the manager and has helped me in the past.

can anyone help?

my specs are:

Athlon 1.2 ghz 200fsb
ecs k7vza mobo
512mb sdram 133mhz
40.1 gig hd
ati radeon 32mb DDR
sound blaster live 1024
56k INTEL MD563x-HaM PCI modem
OS - win98+IE.5

Spirit.

The Intel chipset is the old Cirrus Logic - it's junk. Your friend led you wrong, unfortunately.

Get an external serial modem - don't screw with PCI modems - most of them are controllerless winmodems. Get a Supra Express or a USR Sportster.
