My PC needs more ram
I have a PC that I got 6 years ago. It had Windows ME on it but when I got my iPod I needed XP so I bought it. Now it seems it is extremely low on ram and can't run many low end games.
Here are the specs: Compaq Presario 5008US 800mhz Intel Celeron proc. 128 mb of 168 pin sdram 40gb hdd It will support 512 mb total. What I want to know is can I put one 512 mb stick of ram in one of the slots and pretty discard the 128 mb stick? Or do I have to buy 2x256mb sticks? (PS: I am building a new PC, and I still plan on using this pc for listening to music, and typing etc.) |

Crucial's configurator doesn't show any 512Mb for that model.
Neither does Corsair's. It looks like you will have to go with 2x256Mb. 512Mb should be a pretty good performance increase from 128Mb for using it for basic stuff like that.

WinXP is a RAM hog it seems when you have 256 or under. Two seperate sticks of 256 should do ya... will get everything going a LOT faster.

You should also use a configurator - generic ram can be very problematic in Compaqs and other big name systems. You have to decide if the machine is worth throwing 100 bucks into.

I'd have to agree with GLC, save the money for the RAM, build your new PC and use the XP that you bought on it putting ME back on this box, otherwise you need 100 for the RAM and another 100 for another copy of XP (assuming you want XP on both). 200.00 spare dollars on the new machine could go a long way...

Try to optimize for less
I think I'll probably just throw a 256 mb stick in to give it a performance boost, and then I'll put Mellium Editon back on it once I get my new PC.

Adding a single 256 to the existing 128 is the best compromise between cost and benefit - but still make sure the ram you use is compatible by using a configurator. I can't find anything guaranteed compatible for much under 50 bucks.
XP will run *okay* with 384 - that's not that bad. I'd personally put Win2000 Pro on it, that's the best compromise. ME is just too flaky for my tastes. Last edited by glc; 07-13-2006 at 12:23 PM. |

Here's the least expensive, guaranteed to work 256Mb module that I can find $46 plus tax.

PR, thats the out of the box thread - care to post the right one? That sounds like Crucial's price.
