Possible Hard Drive Failure
The other day, I started my computer and got an error message that said windows startup file is missing and windows can not start. I reformated my hard drive and reinstalled windows. Windows ran for a few days and then I got the same error again. I reformated the entire drive. I set up windows and installed SP2 and disabled the DEP. Windows started up find after that. This morning I went to start windows and got a BSOD. Windows won't even start in safe mode. My computer is water cooled so temp is not a problem. The processor is not even 1/2 a year old, the power supply is fine. The only thing I can think of is that the hard drive is dieing. The hard drive is from previous computer and is close to 6 years old. Do you guys think that my hard drive has finally died.
Thanks for your help. |

It does sound like the harddrive is failing, have you run the harddrive manufacturers diagnostics on it yet?

No I haven't, but to be honest, I've never even heard of that. My hard drive is a Segate Barracuda 7200.7 120 Gigabytes. Where would I need to go to find the hard drive checking software stuff you are talking about?

This is a link to the seatools download from Seagate http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/ you can create a bootable floppy from the download, or you can go here http://www.ultimatebootcd.com and download the ultimate boot cd which contains lots of hardware diagnostic tools not just the seatools harddrive diagnostic.
If you go the ultimatebootcd way you will need cd burning software capable of creating an ISO. If you can go with the UBCD it is more usefull in the long run. |

you could also boot up the xp install disk and run chkdsk /r from the recovery console, that should report any bad sectors, and if the drive is real screwred it may freeze, or take 6 hours to finish or something....

I ran the seagate programs and it found bad sectors and moved the data off of them. After that my computer started. A few hours later after I downloaded a ton of widows updates, (I wish I coud save all of those to my zip drive), it gave me another BSOD. I ran seagate again, it found two bad sectors and repaired them as well and now my computer is running again. I think it is safe to say that I should start saving for a new hard drive.

Yup. Minimize using that machine as much as possible untill you get a new hard drive.
If you have anything important on it, back those files up to CDs or an external hard drive if you have one available.
