USB Cable problems...
Well I just put together a new computer about a week ago. Here are the specs:
AMD X2 4200 AM2 2GB of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 RAM eVGA Geforce 7900 GT' Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard COOLER MASTER CAVALIER 3 CAV-T03-UK Black Aluminum/Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Anyway, not sure if you needed all that but its there just in case. Here is the problem. I put the computer together and got it working. Everything seemed to be fine. I go to hook up my cable modem and I try the USB cord first. I plug it in and the computer just shuts down immediatley. I tried to restart the computer with the cable plugged in and as soon as it got to the Windows XP loading page it would just shut down. I tried the 4 different USB ports in the back on my motherboard and the 2 in the front on the case. I had never seen that before so I just took it out figuring it was the cords problem and used the ethernet cord which works fine. Another reason I believed it was the cords problem was that I have my headphones and printer plugged in through USB and both have been working fine. The printer is plugged into the MB and the headphones are plugged into the front USB port on the side of the case. So here is the big problem. A few days ago I plugged in my digital camera to transfer some pictures with the USB cord that came with it and it worked fine. Then I went on a short trip and came back today with some picutres that I wanted to move to the computer so I plug it in again. All of a sudden..click...computer shuts off. Now the camera USB cord does the same thing as the modem USB cord was doing. I tried it in all the different ports and there is no difference. The computer will shut off if I plug it in while its on and it wont get past the windows loading page with it plugged in if I try to restart. It is a Sony DSC-P8. Not sure if that really matters or not. So anyway I hope this is in the right forum, didnt know where else to put it. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks for your time! |

Disconnect all USB devices, and try the modem and camera one at a time.
If they now work ok, then the onboard USB controller may not have sufficient power with all of the USB devices connected. Suggest installing a powered USB hub. If the modem and camera still have problems with all other USB devices disconnected, then see if they have the same problem on another system. If they do, then try a different USB cord. If they work ok on another system, then there may be a problem with your MB's USB controller. |

Do you have SP2 installed?
It is needed for windows to properly recognize USB 2.0.

If you connected the front USB ports to the motherboard, disconnect them and try using just the rear ports. You may have connected them incorrectly or there may be a case/motherboard compatibility issue.

Well I took out the headphone and printer USB cords which were both working fine. The headphones were in a front port and the printer in the back. After I pulled them out I plugged the camera USB cord into one of the back ports. This time instead of immediatley shutting off I got to the point where I was actually in the folder getting ready to cut paste the pictures onto my computer and then it shut off. Really weird.
And yeah I do have Service Pack 2 along with all the current updates. I still need to try the cord on another system but I dont really think that is the problem. It has worked fine all along for the past couple years. It hasnt had any rough treatment or anything. It just sits in the drawer all the time and I use it everyonce in awhile for just a minute or two to copy the pictures. |

What kind of PSU do you have running on the system? It may not be supplying an adequate amount of power to run your system normally. Otherwise is could be a hardware or driver conflict with some of your devices.

I meant open the case and disconnect the cables from the front ports to the motherboard.
