Just to share the following experiences on PCI v.90 modems :
1) Creative "hard" modem : stable but slow......averaging 31kbps. (Any solutions ?) 2) OEM (Motorola) : connects at 52k but drops connection like crazy. 3) Prolink (Lucent) : connects avg 46.6k but very steady. Using this currently. If you are wondering why i have 3 modems, my problems started after my old modem (cirrus logic) conked out. Got (1), then (2) and then (3). Also, I found that my surge arrestor for the modem helps to increase the speed. Is this logical ? i thought it only protects and even thought that the speed will be slower due to the additional interface between the line and the modem. |

Best solution? Keep the Lucent or get an external serial USR or Supra Express.

Personally, I wouldn't have any of them on my desk, but then you probably wouldn't have a VW bug with a peace sign on the door
Glc named a few acceptable replacements. The surge arrestor part intrigues me. If you're certain it improves speed, allow me to ask how close are you to the telco central office? If you're real close, line could be too hot and the arrestor adding some resistance. A theory at best. BTW, don't trust that sucker during a storm.

If you have been to Singapore, you'll know that the longest length of our island is only ~45km, therefore where my telco is wouldn't make much of a difference

Why? Because most of them are controllerless software modems, and even the hardware PCI modems use virtual com ports and only emulate a standard com port.

Fell in love in Kuala Lumpur once; never did go back to get her. I'm definately screwing up the spelling, but the street was Lerong Terok and a 3rd name I forget.
