Case Fan Pulsing!

I added a case fan to the front for intake air, and it pulses (very annoying) in either manual or auto control (Mobo controled). Has anyone ever had this problem? Could it be a defective fan? Specs below.

Fan: Thermaltake 80mm Smart Case Fan 2 - Wired with power lead only to Mobo 3 pin. Instructions say with power lead only, that it will run 100%, but Mobo is controling. (I want this, just without the pulses.)

Mobo: Intel 975xbx with current bios
Proccessor: Intel Pentium D 850
XGT Case - (Regret the purchase)
Total Fans: 4
Heat sink Fan
Rear exhaust Fan
PCI rear exhaust Fan
Thermaltake 80mm Fan

Yes I realize that this fan is for mobo's without fan control, and that's why it is a smart fan. I misread the discription before buying. Sorry.

Thank you for any thoughts!

It sounds like it isn't full voltage. Try hook it up direct to the PSU with an adapter. Are saying the fan speed is pulsing, or there's an LED doing it?

I just look at one on Newegg, and it looks like there are some jumpers you can set. Try setting it to 100%

What happens if you power the fan off of a power supply connector?

I wouldnt suggest using that fan on a mother board header unless it's used for the cpu...

To get it to run 100% you either need to put the jumper cap on the 2 wires or the speed control on the other 2...then crank the knob all the way up...

If it's pulsing still after it's hooked straight to the PSU I would replace it...

I'll try plugging in to the PSU with a four pin. I think you might be right about the voltage.

Yes, I meant the fan was pulsing, the RPMs

I'm not using the manual controller that came with the fan since the Intel Destop Control Center can do the same thing in manual mode, but when I do go to 100%, the fan doesn't pulse.
That does make me wonder why the mobo pins would fluccuate voltage at low RPM and not high, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks Guys, I'll get back to you.

Welcome to pwm. Alot of fans have problem with pulse width modulation. They require analogue, in that case either get the sunbeam rheobus if you still want to control them or get them off the mobo, and into your psu. But be warned, that fan will be loud unless controlled when not needed.

Your right about the noise with this one. Thanks for the heads up.

I think I'll try to use the fans auto feature with the included temp sensor as well as a PSU lead of course.

P.S. Love that Folding@home, great stress test.

Thanks

Well, I tried pluging it into the four pin from the PSU as well as the manual controler that came in the box (plugs into a fan lead, and you adjust it with a knob). The pulsing has stopped! So, thank you. I just need to find an RPM/Noise trade off that works for me, and stick with it. On the plus side, if I ever need more, I just have to turn the knob (mounted on the outside of the case of course)!
