PC case getting hot

Ok my pc case has been getting pretty hot lately. I don't have any case fans in it. It's about 4 years old. Specs are-

Pentium 4 2.4 gig
1 gig ram
70 gig hard drive
PSU- got no idea what the brand is, 400W
GA-8S640 mother board
6600GT 256mb

Would installing a case fan fix the problem?

Sometimes my PC freezes or resets itself. Could that be the PSU that is causing that?

Im going to build my new PC in about 3 months, but i also want to fix the little problems on this one.

Any ideas??

It is possible that your PC is either over heating or that the PSU is on its way out. Do you have any software to monitor the temperatures inside the case?

Get hold of software such as Everest Home Edition and you can have a look at the temps for the CPU and the temperature inside the case. If things look ok then prehaps its a power supply issue.

However, in the case that its the PSU causing the problems it would probably be the case that the computer would shut down completely as opposed to freezing.

Another possibility is that there are some bad drivers causing the freezing. I recently had an issue with some drivers for a USB wireless adapter that caused my PC to freeze at random occasions. Have you installed any new hadware prior to these problems occuring?

How do you feel its getting hot? Did you do this by checking temperatures? Or is there alot of hot air coming outside of the case? It could be your psu or temperatures equally.
Were you playing a game while the freezing happened?
Speedfan would be a great choice too as you can see your max, minimum and avg temps.

Speedfan, Everest Home Edition, Rivatuner (video card) would be 3 good choices to monitor temps. Just google them.

Have you tried leaving the sidepanel open? Does the problem persist, or is the time before the computer freezes lengthened?

Was this a prebuilt? Or did you build it yourself?

Since you say that the problems have started happening since a graphics card upgrade I'd be tempted to say that its a power issue. Also the fact that the freezing is during games (when power being drawn from the PSU by the graphics card is highest) says that it could be a power issue.

Try downloading Speedfan as recommended by Mr.Ferrari and let us know what your temps are like so we can start to narrow things down a little.

Ok i was playing halflife 2 then and it froze. Had to reset. Went into the BIOS.
System temp - 52 c
CPU temp - 46 c

Does this sound right??
Pre build system.

Opened the side panel now. Everything feels warm.

The CPU temperature isn't overly high...but 52c for the System temp is very high.

Can you tell if the fan on the graphics card is spinning correctly, and the fans in the PSU?

Can you identify where the source of the majority of the heat is? Anything glowing red? lol

I still recommend you get SpeedFan so you can see what the temps are rising to when you are playing the game, things will have had time to cool a little by the time you have restarted and gone into the BIOS.

It's not unusual for a graphics card to reach temperatures into the 70s and 80s but that doesnt mean its not whats causing the problem.

Even if it's not the source of the problem I strongly recommend you get some extra fans cooling that "VERY hot" card a little!!

So is not the PSU??

What fans would you reccomend? There isn'y much room in my case. It's one of those mid towers.

I recently read a review in Custom PC Magazine...they said Akasa fans were good for both air flow and noise levels.

I don't remember what they said was the best ones but it was a brand name begining with S lol

Will see if I can find out!

So the problem is NOT the power supply?

I can't confirm that its deffinatly not the PSU...but I would guess the high system temperature is at least not making matters any better.

OH and the decent fans are the Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000's.

They do both 80mm and 120mm options

Yate loon's are my choice for silence. Anyways. Did you or did you not try to leave the sidepanel off while gaming?

The first thing to check when you suspect overheating is whether there is dust buildup in the case.
Name brand machines generally use pretty good quality power supplies and a 6600GT calls for 350W minimum, so you PSU should be able to handle that card.
Video cards put out a lot more heat than integrated video.
Take the side off the case and blow air into it with a floor fan.
If the game runs right without freeezing, that pretty much confirms that you need to add 1 or more case fans.
If it still freezes, things to look at would be whether you are running the game at too high settings for the available RAM, possible power supply issues (check it for dust buildup too) or a problem with the video card itself.

They look fine. Fire up something intensive, like Prime 95, and see what temp spikes up - that's your CPU temp.

Your temperatures look good to me in your last post.

How many fans do you have installed in the case? Do you have intake fans installed in the front of the case and exhaust fans in the back?

I wouldn't worry about it too much if your system is running fine now.

I would be very comfortable with those temperatures

Are you still having problems with your system freezing?

You mentioned that you do not have any case fans in your case, that could be a major problem because how is the heat supposed to escape from the inside? You need adequette air flow or it might case problems(such as freezes, and random reboots) .

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

Matt

It didnt freeze last night when i played halflife 2. I had the case off. But when i put the case back on it gets VERY warm in there.

The only fans in the case are the CPU fan, graphics card fan and PSU fan.
There is room at the back for 2 fans but no room at the front. Should i maybe get 1 exhaust? Or an intake??

If the computer freezes with the case closed up and acts normally when the side is off, I would say that heat is an issue.

Can you post temperatures under load with the side in place? If they are rising too high, that could cause issues.

An exhaust fan might be a good idea, but let us know the those temps.

maybe post a pic of your case with the side off and we could give you ideas where to put fans for optimal airflow.

Ok after playing halflife 2 for 30 mins with side panel of CASE ON Temps read -

Temp1 - 53c
Temp2 - 25c
Temp3 - 45c
HD0 - 50

Sorry i cant get a pic of my case up i can't find the cable for my camera.

Are these temps too high?
There is spaces for 2 fans (one on top of the other one) at the back of the case.
What fans would you reccomend?

The temperatures do not look too high to me.

In fact they look very good...its a shame you dont know what temps are for what components but none the less they are all good.

As I said earlier if you want case fans the Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000s are good for both air flow and noise level.
