A friend has a Compaq 5451 which she moved to another room and left unplugged for several days. When it was powered up, the HDD would not boot. I don't think she had added any new software recently. She took it to someone who told her the HDD had failed and she had them put in a new HDD. I doubted the original Quantum Fireball CV (about 13 GB) had failed and took a look at it. I tried to hook it up as a slave to the new HDD on the Compaq but the system would not recognize it. I booted the PC from a floppy with the Quantum Fireball CV set as the master and tried to run Quantum diagnostic software I got from Maxtor's web site but the software does not recognize it as a Quantum HDD so won't run. I ran scandisk surface scan and it found no problem but did finish in a few seconds. I tried to re-format the HDD and could not re-format.
When booting from a floppy, I can list the directory of the Fireball. Does this sound like a failed HDD or could it be something else? Thanks for any advice. |

I do not know if your machine was a part of the court action, but Compaq recently settled a suit brought by customers over the failures of Quantium hard drives and the modems used in their machines. You need to contact Compaq ASAP with the information about your machine and the hard drive. The replacement offer is good even if you were not the original purchaser of the machine.

That's the exact problem I have with a 10 gigger Quantum. Mine's not in a Compaq, though.

The drive is dead. Been there and done that with Quantums. You have a nice paperweight. At least WD drives make clicking noises before they fail.
