Does nVidia Chip Set work with ATI Video Card?
I am in the process of building my first computer. I am considering buying an ASUS M2N motherboard along with an AMD athlon 64 X2 3800+ cpu.
The rub is that I have already acquired a Sapphire Radeon X850XT video card. So I notice that the northbridge chipset for the mobo is listed as NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP. So this may be a stupid question, but can I install an ATI card with the NVIDIA chipset? Will it be better to get an NVIDIA video card instead with this chipset? Thanks for any advice you can give. |

Why do you want to use an SLI board for an ATi card? SLI is for running dual nVidia cards. You can run a single ATI card on that board, but not two. If you've already got an ATi card, go for the M2N-E, it's non-SLI (it'll save you some $$)

Yes it will run it fine. I run an ATI card in an NVIDIA chipset mobo no problem. As blue mentioned, if you're not going Crossfire or SLI, get the single PCIE slot version of the mobo you selected.

Not exactly - the nVidia chipset CAN run multiple Nvidia cards in SLI if an SLI board is purchased. You can also buy a motherboard with an Nvidia chipset with just the one PCI-E x16 slot for a single video card, which if you're buying an ATI card, is the recommended option.

All video cards for PCI-Express are DX9. Not sure what version DX has to do with anything...
