CD/DVD Rom Burns but can't read

a few months back I had a virus on my computer. After successfully removing it using various tools, my cd/dvd rom doesn't work right. I have installed a different cd/dvd rom and the same situation occurs. The BIOS looks correct, the device shows up in device manager with no conflicts. When I put in a Cd say with pictures on it, I can't see them. I can burn to the CD as well and take the CD to another computer and see the images. I can play a music CD using music match but no other players, ie ITunes. I am completely clueless, I have looked everywhere for a fix and can't find it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, looked for updated drivers, etc. The problem also is I can't read program CD's like my XP OS or other program CD's. I have searched the internet for a fix, none of the microsoft KB's fit the description of what I have. I have removed the upper and lower filters as prescribed in one KB from microsoft, but if I do then music match stops working. So then I can't do anything with the device.

Any suggestions?

Boot with the XP CD and do a repair reinstall of XP. Sounds like you have some really screwed up system files.

Procedures for a repair reinstall are in our Tips and Tricks forum in a sticky thread.
