problems with newly installed dvd burner

so i just bought a 16x lite on dvd burner and installed it into my computer. i had removed my old dvd-rom and the computer now recognizes the burner. i installed the burning software that came with the burner (nero 6.6). this was an upgrade from my previous version of nero 5.5 which i uninstalled. However, the problem arises everytime i try to burn a dvd with the new burner nero freezes everytime at "caching files" and the computer has to be restarted to make this go away.

i tried burning a cd with my other drive and it did, so i dont think it is a problem with the nero software. i also ran a registry scan on my computer and cleaned up all the problems that it showed. im not sure if i installed the drive wrong though im pretty sure it is extremely straight forward.

any one have any idea what could be wrong, thanks for any input.

How much free space is on your system partition? Could you please provide some system specs?

I assume you set the jumper on the drive the same as the drive you replaced was set to. You also need to make sure it's running in DMA mode.

by system partition im going to assume you mean my partition with windows on it, in that case there is 40 gb total (27 available).

my system is old i built it about 4 years ago i think i dont know but any ways:

amd athlon xp 1800
soyo dragon
1 gb pc 2700 ram
40 gb wd hd (windows partition with almost nothing else on it)
120 gb wd hd (for everything else)
lite on cd-rw
**lite on dvd-rw**(the new drive)

i replaced a lite on dvd-rom which had the master jumper, so obviously i put the same jumper settings on the new dvd drive that i put in.

as for the dma mode im not exactly sure what you mean but that.

also one other thing when i boot my computer is says thats theres no 80 pin conductor cable connected to the second ide channel (the one with the cd-rw and new dvd-rw drive) since i used the same old 40 pin cable because i didnt get an 80 pin one with the drive. from what i read the 80 pin drive just makes it a little faster (which would be negible for dvd drives to my understanding, correct me if im wrong) and would only be useful if a hard drive was installed on the ide channel which there isnt.

another thing to add it seems that i can rip dvds using the drive since i am currently doing so using dvd shrink. dont know if that helps at all. thanks

ok and i looked up dma mode and how to set it but on my computer when i go to ide ata in the device manager and go to properties there is no advanced settings where i can put "dma if available" or whatever. so im not sure what mode the drive is in but i believe i can reboot my computer and it will say while it is booting up? correct? thanks.

On general principles - go pick up a 80 wire cable and use it. The new burner may be an ATA66 device and can benefit from it. Change the jumpers to Cable Select if you do that.

You *may* need to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard. I'm assuming that is most likely a Via-based board. What version of Windows are you using?

installing that driver made it worse i now get error messages on my device manager for the primary and secondary ide channels as well as an error on the secondary ultra ata/atapi channel.

the error reads: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

im going to try to restore my system back before this.

any other ideas and thanks again for the help.

it wont let me system restore so i guess i have to uninstall the new drivers for now and go back to the old ones because it wont let me rollback either since i didnt have the previous ones saved.

on another note i now see the advanced settings on the ide channels where it says dma if available.

any ways ill wait until you reply to try to uninstall the drivers because im not exactly sure which i need to uninstall.

just went to the soyo site to see if they had any bios and i just and installed the newest thing they had there for my motherboard. via v4.53 i believe, here's the link:

umm another thing i just noticed is that only my primary ide channel is set to use "dma if avaibable" and is using ultra dma mode 5. this channel is the one with the 2 hard drives on it. the secondary ide channel is set to use pio mode right now and that was by default. this channel has thenew dvd burner as the master and the old cd-rw as the slave.

should i change that one to use dma? thanks.

one other thing is i dont have sp2 installed, dont know if that helps at all.

Yes, you need to change that PIO to DMA.

Via 4.53 is not a bios, that's just an older chipset driver. The one I linked to is 5.09 and is recommended by Via for the KT400 chipset.

ok i changed the pio to dma mode, however that does not fix the problem of there resources or the code 12.

i changed it to dma if availlable but it says it is still using pio mode.

at boot the computer reads the both ide channels because i can see all the devices connected but when i get into windows the drives no longer work.

how do i free up resources? i went through the troubleshooting thing but i couldnt uncheck "use automatic settings"

the primary ide is using i/o range 01F0-01F7 and 03F6 and IRQ 14
i think the conflict is that the primary ultra ata/atapi channel is using the same i/o range and IRQ channel.

the same goes for the secondary ide except is it using i/o range 0170-0177 and 0376 and IRQ 15. this is conflicting with the secondary ultra ata/atapi.

You have 4 IDE channels? How many connectors are on the board? Are there any SATA connectors?

4 ide channels 2 are only for raid so im not using them.

i dont think there are any sata connectors.

What you need to do is disable the RAID controllers in the bios.

If you have disabled the RAID controllers COMPLETELY in bios, then remove all IDE controllers in device manager and reboot.

im pretty sure i have completely removed all the raid controllers in the bios. there was just one setting that said enable/disable onboard ide raid or something to that extent.

when you say remove the ide controllers in the device manager do you mean disable my ide controller? the only controller i see present is via bus master ide controller.

So, you still have 2 IDE and 2 Ultra ATA/ATAPI channels in device manager? Right click on each one and select Uninstall.

ALL of them. If all of them come back after a reboot, then you have to disable the ones you aren't using in device manager if you can't find where to completely shut them off in the bios.
