first build, need dvd burner help.

OK my question is should my dvd drive be working when i turn my pc power on, even though i have yet to instal the cpu and go through bios. I wanted to try everything out before my new cpu arrives tommorow but my dvd drive will not open.

So the question is do i need to go through bios before this drive will be functional?

You should NEVER try to start up a computer without the CPU installed.

You will want to remove the motherboard from the case to install the CPU and ram. Otherwise, the board flexes too much and can crack.

I'd advise you power it up for the first time out of the case just to make sure the core components are working. Procedures are here:
