Inserting DVD into DVD drive

When you insert a DVD or CD into a DVD/CD drive and it's not ready and blinks for 20 seconds what is it doing? Getting ready to read the disc? Cause my new $80 Plextor takes at least 30 seconds before it's ready. My old Samsung was ready as soon as I put it into the tray.

Does this happen with any and all types of discs? Do you have the drive installed to the same IDE cable and jumper config as your last one, or has something there been changed?

Actually is doesn't take that long, I timed it maybe 15 seconds. But it will freeze (no response) when I try to open the drive and on CDs. One day it will freeze on a CD song, the next day it won't. No pattern, it's random. It happens with all my Memorex and Phillips DVDs/CDs. I have same configuration and set as Master. They told me I could get an RMA.

Plextor website says following media are compatible: Mitsubishi, Ricoh and Phillips (DVD+RW only)
Where am I going to find Mitsubishi and Ricoh DVD/CDs? I do use Phillips DVD+RW.

If I knew this I don't think I would have bought it. But I didn't see any combo drives that had 100% positive reviews at Newegg or Tigerdirect.

Mitsubishi manufactures discs for several other companies. One of which is Verbatim. Verbatim is my recommendation for media.

I have a Plextor CD burner and it is the best burner of any type that I have ever owned. My NEC DVD burner works fine but it just doesn't perform like the Plextor CD burner.

Every drive I have ever had has taken around ten seconds to recognize a disc.

Plextor drives do take longer to recognize a disc. I've had a HP DVD burner for 3 years and then got my Plextor 716A. It takes noticeably longer. What's it do during that time ? Probably already some tests like testing the optimal burning speed and things like that.

Freezing during a CD shouldn't occur, though. I have to admin I never played an audio cd in my plex burner, only in my plex dvd-rom 116A2 (which recognizes a disc almost instantly).
