NEC media compatibility

Does anyone know what media is compatible with new NEC DVD/CD drives? I went to their website it was like a maze and found nothing.

I bought a beautiful $70 Plextor (with $20 rebate) and found out it only supports Mitsubishi and Ricoh DVDs/CDs! Where am I going to find those things??? Maybe if I go to Japan! So I'm returning it. It's not responding well to my CDs.

NEC seems to have the best reviews at Tigerdirect and Newegg.

Regardless of what the website says, any drive should support *most* media out there. I've used TDK and Verbatim in my Lite-On with no issues.

NEC makes great DVD Burners. I've had 2 now and NEVER had a problem with either one. I use mainly Ritek DVD's for all my backups. They're inexpensive, well made, and load up fine in every stand alone DVD Player I've tried, including Xbox and PS2.

You can get a 100Pack spindle at newegg for about 25 bucks or so... depends on the sales they have. -R and +R have all worked great for me.

I have Plextor-NEC and Lite-On and I have never had any media issues as long as the media was a quality brand. Mitsubishi makes a lot of media for different companies. You can check the media manufacturer with Plextools, DVD InfoPro,Nero or any software that will ID media.

A firmware update can make a difference, too. I recently had to upgrade the firmware on my NEC 3520A DVD Writer to get good burns on some new Datawrite media.

As others have said, the manufacturers compatability list doesn't mean much. As long as you aren't using super cheap and poorly made media, you should not have any issues.

Mitsubishi Chemical makes media for many brands. Verbatim is one of them and that is what I recommend. An excellent rescource for DVD/CD media information is the AfterDawn Forum and website.

By the way, the user reviews on Newegg are generally not what you would want to base a purchase on. NEC burners are nice, I have one, but I like my Plextor more.
