I think I have a dead IDE channel on my A8N-SLI deluxe. This is what I did:
one hdd on IDE channel 0 + one dvd-rom and one cd burner on IDE channel 1 = one hdd on channel 0 in BIOS Then: one dvd-rom and one cd burner on IDE channel 0 + one hdd on IDE channel 1 = one dvd-rom and one cd burner on IDE channel 0 in BIOS Next I swapped IDE cables...same results. All the drives have power. They all turn on at boot but for some reason they do not show up in BIOS nor Device Manager in Windows. What I'm questioning is if there is anything else I can do to get this second channel to work. I have never used it before in the year and 1/2 that I have had the computer, so I can't say if it has ever worked in the past. Have I done everything?

On some current motherboards only one IDE channel is native to the chipset and the other is controlled by another IDE controller that needs drivers installed before it can work in Windows. I'm not sure if this is the case with your motherboard but it's something to look into (read the motherboard manual regarding IDE controllers).

You know that is a good idea...there is a marvell yukon chip on the board for eithernet. Could that also control IDE channel 1? cause i dont have the drivers for that installed...

Cricket,
If he means this board : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131517 It's got two regular PATA connectors and a set of RAID connectors plus enough options in the bios to keep the compulsive "tweaker" happy. From his description "0+" it sounds like he tried to use both the RAID IDE connectors and the regular ones. He could still have a dead IDE port or he could have something disabled in the bios.

Ok, I went to Downloads at the Asus website and downloaded IDE drivers and anything else that I did not have installed. Now there is nothing that Hardware Manager shows a problem with.
It all seems strange to me because both Primary and Secondary IDE channels appear in Hardware Manager to be working perfectly...yet no drives pop up on the Secondary IDE channel! Also there is nothing in BIOS that I can see to "turn on" the Secondary IDE. I never had to "turn on" the Primary IDE in BIOS... This kinda stinks... |
