Hard Drive enclosure /hard drive problem

Hi,

As explained elsewhere in this forum my desktop computer recently blew up and I'm currently using a laptop (for all specs see my sig).

I bought two Safecom 3.5" External Boxes, one for each of the hard drives from my desktop so that I could access them on my laptop.

I installed the main (the 40gb Exelstor) HD into one box, and that works fine. I installed the secondary HD (the Barracuda) from my desktop into the other box but nothing happens. The little light doesn't come on and when I plug it all in to the computer it doesnt even see it.

I then tried installing the working drive into both boxes and both time it worked no problem so it's definately a problem with the Barracuda drive.

There was never any problem with the Barracuda previously and it is the newer of the two, and probably the better of the two also, and it was used as secondary not primary.

What I think it might be is the jumpers. When used on my desktop as secondary drive it wasn't necessary to have any jumpers on it atall. It only has 8 pins. Perhaps it should have jumpers now? But the diagram only gives positions for: 1. Master on / slave off 2. Cable select 3. Limit drive to 32 gb.

I cannot think how the drive could have been permenently damaged so I guess it must be the setting up some how. I know the Enclosure box works ok - so any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks for reading.

I do believe you want that drive jumpered as either master or cable select to do what you are doing.

...and you were right. Thanks very much.

The first one I tried was as master and it worked immediately. I had assumed it should be as slave or somesuch but I guess I was wrong.

I'm really pleased to have it up and running, thanks for reading and helping.

It's actually odd that it has always worked without a jumper. Western Digital HD's I thought were the only ones that go with no jumper and only if they are all alone on the ide channel.

No jumper on that drive is slave. That's how it was set up in the computer if I read things correctly - as a slave to the ExcelStor. IDE drives won't run set to slave in a housing.

This is why I highly recommend *all* IDE installations use 80 wire cables - and you jumper *everything* to cable select. Keeps things a lot simpler.
