Help needed with Core 2 Duo...

Hi
last night i built my first PC, ASUS P5B mobo, e6600 processor using the stock fan
today I installed windows xp, early this morning, everything was fine, processor and mobo were cool
I was playing the FEAR demo today, just for a short period. Then I turned off the computer
About 20 minutes laters I decided to turn the PC back on and I get an error: CPU Fan Error!
It turns out the CPU fan isnt moving AT ALL. It was just sitting there
First thing I did was I went and made sure it was still connected properly, which it was. I tried again, same error, so this time I unplugged the CPU fan and then plugged it back in. Didnt help.
Anyone know how to fix this problem? Im going to go crazy if this is a serious problem after only 12 hours

Thanks

Either the heatsink fan died or the FAN header on the motherboard died.

Can you get the heatsink fan to work on one of the other FAN headers?

Not sure how you would check if the CPU FAN header is burnt out or not...it's a 4 pin header, right? Not sure if you can connect a 3 pin fan to it.

I dont know how to check to see if its the HSF. It is 4pin and there is only one 4pin header on the mobo, the CPU_FAN (the one that may be broken).
Id like to be able to make sure its the HSF and not the mobo

Thanks for the quick response

EDIT- I plugged the fan into a spare chassis fan header. Works perfectly. Thanks alot for your help, you are a beast, a true navy seal, a true green beret, a true nightstalker, a true david koresh.

You'll probably still get the CPU fan error since no fan to provide feedback on that header.

Is it possible the "q-fan" (or whatever it's called) is keeping the fan stopped until the temp heats up? I think that functionality will regulate the fan speed based on CPU temp, so maybe it's not giving it enough power to start the fan? Just a thought....

Use a multimeter and see if you have any voltage at the pins. If you've got voltage there, it's probably the fan.

I have one more question.
The last thing I did before the fan stopped working was play FEAR. I had been doing that all day but the last time, I put the settings on MAX. Could this have ruined the cpu fan header? I know its not the fan because it works when I plug it into the chassis fan header. I want to know if that could have been the reason because I dont want to ruin the chassis fan header as well.
Thanks for your responses.

Playing a game should not have anything to do with this.

Thanks.
I didnt think so, just didnt want to ruin another header.

You are a true navy seal.
Is around 40 C an average idle temp for conroe?

:
nop ... even with Q-fan AI enabled in quiet/silent mode it will go at 1 700 RPM minimum .. i know it because it's my setting right now. At idle it CPU run at 27C & fan : 1795 RPM ... when things get under load the fan reach 2200 + RPM .. the highest temp ive seen is 45 C ( stock intel fan )

next week i will get my Arctic freezer 7 pro for my CPU thing will be cooler ( hello 3Ghz OC )

seem that the connector on the mobo is shoot if you can plug the fan elsewhere and it works. All i know is that there is some sort of thermistor on the intel fan that detect heat and with Q-FAN or not, the fan will speed up my himself anyway ( if not power limited )

is this bad? ive looked around everyone else is having lower temps in the 20s and 30s

Those temps are fine. You need to look at what cooling "everyone else" is using and what CPU's they are using. People with hefty aftermarket cooling, water cooling, etc are going to have lower temps than stock cooling (I haven't seen 20's for anything though)

have you tried a different fan? or heatsink and fan idk lol... i'm sure it's worth something to replace stock fans and stuff...

if that doesn't work, i'm sure someone will come up with what to do. RMA the board perhaps idk.

I just put one of those on my e6600 and it dropped me from 42c~ to 31c~. It's lighter than most of the others coolers out there and preforms about the same. And to boot It's quite.

But if it's the header then, I see a RMA in your future. If you have another computer try and use the cpu fan from it to judge if the header is shot.
