Standard vs Server Backup Programs ?
Hi all
Have googled my brains out I recently discovered that our backup strategies are not working. We are currently backing up our server to an Iomega Rev35, using their bundled program. The server has 40gb drives that are setup to mirror, which I suppose is adequate as far as a system backup. We were using the Rev35 as a system backup also, however, the bundled program is not adequate. This was discovered when an important file was accidently deleted and I was tasked with recovering that file. The server runs Windows 2000 Server, and by all rights is a mere file server. Althought, we do have 2 programs that run from the server, 1 of which runs a small bundled SQL program. I am now tasked with giving my boss some backup solutions, and am looking at both on-site and off site possibilities. For on-site, I have looked at several programs, standard and server editions, and know that when I take this to my boss, I will have to explain the significant cost differences between standard and server editions. So, I guess my question is, with what we are actually using the server for, and the fact that we only want to backup the data from the server, why do I need a server edition backup program. Is a server edition really necessary? Thanx for your input. Boatiac |

You have to use a server edition backup program because a standard edition will not install on a server operating system. All the backup software companies do this. Your best bet without spending a fortune is try out the builtin Windows Backup and see if it will do what you need. Otherwise, you are looking at several hundred bucks for Backup Exec or something similar.

Thank you very much. I figured that would be the response, but needed to hear from those that know
