Smile Power Supply Problem

Okay here's how it happened.

New computer I got a couple months ago fried due to high incoming voltage. I am fairly certain only the power supply fried though as the components inside appeared to not be smoldering or anything like that. The board on the inside had no remaining charge in them nore were warm in the slightest.

So I got a new power supply. It is 480 watts rather than the original 300 watt supply I had in the computer so power is not an issue, yet the computer does not power on at all. Hell, the fan on the power supply doesn't even turn on. All the cables are connected in the right place:

One small four pin to the motherboard
One 24 pin to the motherboard
Two horizontal four pins to the two DVD drives I have in the computer
and lastly
One SATA type power adapter connected to the hard drive

The computer was Media Center computer I requested HP to build with a Pentium D processor. m7250n is the model. I tried to power on the supply without hooking it up to the computer but that didn't turn on the supply either (not that I thought it would).

So my thought is either the power supply is **** snd I have to return it or the motherboard is gone. I also wondered though if perhaps because my new supply is a different model than the other one that perhaps incompatibility was the problem.

Any help or advice apprerciated

Being a HP computer, the PSU may have proprietary connections. If that is the case, any old PSU off the shelf will NOT work, as the wiring is different than standard. Can you list the FULL specs of the HP computer?

By the way, can a power supply turn on without being attached to a computer? No? thanks.

No, the PSU needs to be attached to something to conduct it's output. It needs a certain load to give power to. An alternative PSU isn't going to work in a particular motherboard with power contacts of differing orientation to a standard PSU wiring. Contact HP to inquire about a PSU replacement, make sure you have the model number of the computer and the PSU at hand.

Or better yet, have HP give you another computer. That's what warranties are for.

You could have easily voided the warranty by digging around in there. Put everything back the way it was, and contact HP.

Trust me, I thought about the warrenty but it was refurbished so I don't believe there is a warrenty. I checked and couldn't find anything. Well I'll try the power supply idea supplied by Gizmo. Thanks everyone and if you all have any other suggestions I'll be checking in.
