SATA PCI Card

I just bought a Koutech Sata PCI card so that i can hook up another harddrive to my computer. My mobo limits me to the use of only 2 sata drives and i need more storage! However, when i hook everything up as it should be, my computer won't boot past boot checking sequence. Instead, everything hangs. If i don't have the 3rd HD plugged in (plugged into the pci card that is), then everything boots fine. Therefore, i assumed that the pci card was overriding the onboard sata.. So, i tried switching my main HD (that has windows on it) to the PCI card, and i get a boot failure.

Any suggestions? I've tried whatever has been said above. As well, i have tried playing with bios settings... I've changed the bootup sequence 4 times for all the HDD settings that it has. My bios also does not have any "choose PCI before/after another piece of hardware." A lot of people from search results on google say there is some sort of option for that.

Perhaps i have a crappy PCI card? It was only 14 bucks... i thought it was too good to be true myself :-/.

Thanks in advance
WK

Leave the drive off the PCI card, then install the drivers for the card in Windows. Then move the boot drive to the card.

i get a boot system failure when i move my boot drive to the pci card... besides, i really don't want to put my boot drive on the card .... unless i won't notice any performance difference... i figure my mobo has faster sata.... not sure though.

ok.. so i hooked up both of my storage drives to the pci card... i get a error concerning no os... so i change one of the storage drives with my boot drive... and windows loads.... therefore, this piece of crap card must require that 2 drives be used on it at once. it must be a raid only card.

Is there any work around for this possibly?

OH! one more thing... the 2nd harddrive won't show up in windows now.... so i suspect there is still a problem.

when you say it wont show up in windows, where are you looking?

can you see it in disk management which is located in computer management by right clicking my computer.

no.. it doesn't show in disk management...

i've screwed something up however... tried flashing the bios on the pci card... and it didn't work out as planned... so i think i may have screwed up the bios all together ... i'll have to look into that now.

You mean you flashed the BIOS on your motherboard or the flash ROM on the PCI card itself?

Did you install the drivers for the PCI card and THEN install the card into the PC...this can sometimes make a difference!

Make sure the card is installed correctly and being displayed in the Device Manager before you start connecting disks to it or you are likely to run into all sorts of problems.

If you need more storage, do you have any IDE channels still open?

ok.. sorry.. scratch what i said about the bios.. i have my system set up like glc suggested... I put my main boot drive on the pci card (which is now working because i was able to flash the pci card to a different version that allows non raid config) and my two storage HDDs on my onboard sata controller...

Now, i'm just having a problem of detecting the newest HDD on the mainboard (i've never used it before -- it's brand new). The other identicle HDD shows up however. The new HD does not show up in disk management.

EDIT: I did not flash the onboard.. i flashed the pci card... and the PCI card is showing up in device manager.
Now, it's a matter of getting my onboard sata controller to recognize the new HDD...

EDIT2: I went into device manager.. clicked on the onboard SATA device.. and it shows both HDDs... only disk management fails to see one.

EDIT3 (Final edit i think!): I restarted.. looked back at disk management.. and the new HD showed up! thanks.. i got it all working i think.. however, i still don't like that my main boot drive is on the PCI card... will that slow anything down? i think my mainboard sata controller is 150... same as pci.. but i always see onboard components as faster than anything pci... perhaps that is a misconception.

I think you are worrying too much about very minor differences in performance.
