Booting hard drive problem

I have two hard drives on my computer and windows 2000 was loaded on both of them .
Recently on my main hard drive I was doing some things and all of a sudden a memory dump began than the windows shut down after that I wasn`t able to get into the hard drive. The hard drive is 40gb and is a maxtor. Says problem with booting.This hard drive is partioned into three partitions other than main one but all that was on them were files to save.
After not being able to get into the hard drive I went into my other hard drive and on that I was able to get all the saved files from the corrupt hard drive except the one with windows on it.
My question is is there anyway I can get any files off of the corrupt partition ? I have read several articles on the problem and one suggested using linus and than copying corrupt hard drive to another hard drive . But I do not have another hard drive that is empty am wondering if I can copy the partition to my other hard drive which I am now using or does the hard drive have to be empty./
The biggest thing I would like is my E mail addresses have some but not the latest ones.
If worse comes to worse I guess I can do without them also may have some tax information on there.

Try running chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r on the partition.
