Are you trying to format from within Windows?
What operating system are you using and trying to reinstall? Do you have a boot disk? Cricket

OK.
Your cd-rom goes first in the boot order, go into the bios for that, then you reinstall. That means you remove partitons, redo them and redo file choice, NTFS please, and then format the partition. |

What Pam is saying is you use the XP CD to do the partitioning and formatting, not some other utility. You boot with the XP CD.

fdsk?
The XP cd can do it all on its' own, if you're using a boot floppy, lose it. If you used some 3rd party utility when you set up the hard drive then go here : http://www.killdisk.com/ Load and run the utility ( floppy or bootable cd ,your choice) and zero out the drive then boot from the XP cd. |

Download the diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturer and run them. They will run from a boot floppy or boot CD.

If you made a bootable disk and put the floppy drive first in the boot order in the bios it should boot from it. |

Hold it please.
What you're telling me is that you just put in the floppy disk copied the program to it and then tried to boot from the prompt skipping all the other steps. You format and make the floppy bootable, you copy the program to it. Eject floppy disk. Put the floppy drive first in the boot order. Insert the now bootable floppy and exit from the bios. Run the diagnostic. If the drive won't work under those circumstances then you have a problem with the drive. |

The diagnostic you need is Hitachi Drive Fitness test. You download it, then you run it with a blank floppy in the drive - it will MAKE a bootable floppy. Then boot with it.
Download Windows diskette creator (2,127 KB) - creates DOS bootable diskette http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/suppor...2_v408_b00.EXE |
