unable to change bios

All,
Being unsuccessful with the installation of service pack two (locks up) I have attempted to follow Gateway's procedure for updating (upgrading?) the bios which Microsoft says is "Method One" for fixing the installation problems with SP2. (I also installed Method 2 without sucess as well)
I have followed the instructions explicitly and when attempting to "restart" with the floppy disc in the drive, it will not read the disc and install as expected but rather simply says "non system disc or disc error" and continues to boot normally when the disc is removed.
I also put the upgrade bios on a cd and tried to boot up from there without any sucess. I would really like to keep this computer in service but if I can't get SP2 installed I may have to strip it for parts. It's a Gateway Lexington, 120 gig, Pentium 4. Hope I have provided enough info.
I appreciate your time and consideration
Danny

It sounds like you did not create the bios update disk properly, and it's not bootable.
